Green Connect (Geležinkelio str. 16)
The new Station Square is a modern, distinctive and recognisable landmark of the capital. The Vilnius Connect project for the transformation of the Vilnius Station area marks the completion of an important milestone: Zaha Hadid Architects, based in London, has been officially announced as the winner of the architectural competition for the station area.
The world-renowned architectural studio presented the Green Connect idea, which received the highest number of points in the international competition organised last year by Lithuanian Railways (LTG) Group and Vilnius City Municipality.
One of the solutions proposed by the studio is a 9,500 square metre structure over the railway tracks, connecting the Naujininkai district with Naujamiestis and the Old Town. This structure should include commercial space and a new passenger waiting hall with a direct passage to the platforms. There will also be convenient connections for pedestrians and cyclists above the tracks. The project is also expected to transform Stoties Square and the Vilnius City Public Transport Terminal.
Vilnius City Municipality and Lithuanian Railways are organising the Vilnius Connect project to renovate the Vilnius railway station area. The aim is to create a modern multifunctional centre with public spaces.
