Vilnius to celebrate its birthday with the second annual festival of lights
Vilnius’ second annual Festival of Lights will be celebrating the city’s 697th birthday with 30 light installations from 24 to 26 January. The international festival will concentrate on the courtyards of Vilnius Old Town, bringing a bit of warmth to the cold mid-winter, drawing attention to the city’s architecture, and inviting people to explore some of its most stunning hidden corners.
The first Vilnius Festival of Lights was well-received, attracting more than 130,000 visitors to the 26 light installations set up by artists from 8 countries – everyone was especially surprised by the illuminated sword of the Gediminas statue at Cathedral Square. This year, the festival will highlight the work of Lithuanian artists. From the courtyard of the Arts Printing House to the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, this year’s installations, which will include depictions of various symbols of Vilnius, promise to delight and surprise. The Vilnius Festival of Lights is one of the highlights of the capital’s birthday celebration in the run-up to the city’s 700th anniversary in 2023.
