European Health Insurance Card
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders are entitled to receive state-provided medically necessary healthcare during temporary stays in EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country. The EHIC is issued within 14 days and it is valid for two months to 18 years.
How to apply for EHIC?
Required documents:
- A completed application form;
- Passport/ID;
Where to submit your application:
- Personally at the Territorial Health Insurance Fund;
- By visiting e.vlk.lt;
- By e-mail.
The representative of the insured can provide a request only at the Territorial Health Insurance Fund.
What is covered by the European Health Insurance Card?
EHIC covers any state-provided medical treatment that becomes necessary during your stay because of either illness or an accident.
Important:
- Reduced-cost or free medical treatment from state healthcare providers;
- Only first aid.

What is not covered by the European Health Insurance Card?
- The European Health Insurance Card is not a substitute or replacement for private travel insurance. You should always take out an appropriate private insurance policy in addition to carrying your card;
- It will not cover the costs of private healthcare or services that are not part of the state healthcare system;
- It will not cover the costs of being repatriated to your home country;
- It will not allow you to go abroad specifically to receive treatment (including going abroad to give birth);
- It does not guarantee free services. As each country's healthcare system is different, services that cost nothing at home might not be free in another country.
